SIEGE: Titan Wars
While it's easy to feel a slight twinge of disappointment by how derivative a lot of new mobile titles feel, in a glass half full sense, it's pretty remarkable how refined game mechanics that work well on mobile are getting. The latest example of a game that takes everything that's popular in mobile and re-assembles the pieces in an increasingly polished way is Tilting Point and Simutronics' Siege: Titan Wars [Free]. It's got elements of Clash Royale [Free], an art style that's a bit closer to Vainglory [Free], and gameplay that mixes in more than a few dashes of those classic Castle Defense sort of games. Of course this is also wrapped in cards to collect and upgrade, chests that unlock in real-time, and player vs player combat with clans you can join if you want to play with friends.
Siege: Titan Wars is a new player-vs-player iOS and Android game from developer Simutronics and co-publisher Tilting Point. It’s set in a familiar medieval fantasy world where you defend your castle and attack enemies with a mix of infantry and siege units, as well as super-powered units called Titans.
Before each Siege battle, you curate your “deck” of units and spells based on their strengths and mana costs. The battle happens in real time, with mana that gradually refills as you spend it. You can summon standard units, like swordsmen or archers, whenever you want, but three spells show up at a time in a randomized order. Titan units are categorized as spells, and can be placed anywhere on the battlefield.
Titan Wars is going to look very familiar. At the start of each four-minute battle, you're given five mana, which recharges once every second. You use said mana to play cards, which sends your warriors into the fray.
Titan Wars uses just one lane on a much longer battlefield, which makes for some messy, high scale battles that you won't see in other games of this nature. It makes fights feel more epic and frantic, which is a nice new touch to what would otherwise be a very derivative game.
The game's tutorial walks you through the basic gist of what you'll be doing: Building and assembling a deck of cards that are summoned using a constantly replenishing mana pool to (hopefully) overwhelm your opponent and eventually siege their castle. Card types include powerful titan units, warriors, and spells. Your warriors and titans just wander down the battlefield themselves, attacking anything in their way. The only thing you can target is your magic spells, which depending on your deck load-out can either be support spells that do things like heal your units or offensive spells which knock-back enemy units, burn 'em with fire, and more.
Simutronics is a studio that’s part of Stillfront, a group of publishers and developers that operates out of Sweden and previously made games like Call of War and Unravel. It’s previously developed games like Lara Croft: Relic Run, a Temple Run-esque title featuring the main heroine of the popular Tomb Raider franchise. Before its entry into the mobile games world, Simutronics developed multi-user dungeon role-playing games like Gemstone (1987) and the 1993 3D game CyberStrike.
As you can see from the above trailer, the scale of these battles feel significantly more epic than other Clash Royale-likes, with battles typically ending with massive swarms of units fighting. Folks on our forums seem to be digging the game, and while it doesn't feel like Siege: Titan Wars brings a whole lot of new stuff to the table, as a mash-up of popular game mechanics, it works quite well. Siege: Titan Wars is now available to download on the App Store, and it's likely there won't be a shortage of people to play against with its massive feature slot.
There's a good range of cards to start out, from your basic soldier units to more advanced cards like Sorcerers and Werewolves. You can cast, spells, too, which do anything from raw damage to crowd control. I had a blast using Gravity Well to suck enemies into one tight spot and then bomb them with a Fireball.
The titular Titans are super powerful spell cards that summon impressive beasts onto the battlefield to cause sweeping damage. You'll collect a wide variety during your adventures, and each has their own unique strength which keeps combat interesting.
Collect and upgrade remarkable cards, including legendary warriors, devastating spells, and enormous Titans. Destroy your opponent’s Towers and siege their Castle in spectacular battles. Call upon Titans of legend and watch your enemies fall.
The aim of these larger battles is to cleverly use your cards in well-timed strategy to overwhelm your opponent, and it's quite fun, even if you're just starting your own card collection.
While it's fun to watch these scrabbles play out, there's very little input from players. You can only choose where to place your spells and your Titans. All other ground units will deploy from your castle.
Not only does this limit your strategy, if the fight is further up the field, you'll have to wait long, precious seconds for reinforcements to reach the heat of the battle. These small limitations might bother players who like to have a more hands-on approach.
A worthy copycat
SIEGE: Titan Wars is an unabashed copycat. However, Titan Warsmakes subtle improvements to an established genre that are mostly welcome and refreshing. If you're looking for something brand new and innovative, you may want to look elsewhere
